About us

The Flag & Torch Society was never supposed to become a nonprofit.

It started with a handful of frustrated military NCOs who found themselves in the Signal Corps at Fort Drum with the 10th Mountain Division. Coming from different backgrounds, they quickly discovered that modern communications was far more than simply operating radios or maintaining equipment. It was a discipline that blended leadership, technology, networking, radio frequency engineering, cybersecurity, and problem-solving into a single profession.

Like many soldiers before them, they were dissatisfied with the status quo. Instead of accepting limitations, they began experimenting, learning, and building. They challenged conventional thinking, developed new approaches to tactical communications, and spent countless hours designing, testing, and refining communications architectures that were more resilient, adaptable, and effective.

What started as a small group of motivated communicators soon became a culture of continuous education.

Members pursued amateur radio licenses, CompTIA certifications, college degrees, military courses, and industry training. They learned that communications is not a single skill but a lifelong journey. More importantly, they recognized that the opportunities available to them were often unknown to many others serving across the military.

That realization became the foundation of the Flag & Torch Society.

Our mission is simple: educate, connect, and empower military personnel, veterans, and communications enthusiasts through technical education, mentorship, and hands-on experience. We believe that strong communicators make stronger teams, stronger communities, and stronger nations.

Today, the Flag & Torch Society serves as a community where members can share knowledge, collaborate on projects, explore emerging technologies, and develop practical communications skills. Through our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, we create volunteer opportunities, support educational initiatives, and help members build experience that benefits both military and civilian careers.

We are also committed to growing the amateur radio community. The Society regularly assists new operators in earning their licenses and donates radios to newly licensed technicians to help them get on the air and begin developing real-world communications skills.

Five years after those first conversations among a group of determined Signal Soldiers, the mission continues to grow. Our members represent multiple military branches, backgrounds, and specialties, yet they remain united by a shared belief that communications matters. Whether advocating for innovative operating concepts, supporting organizations such as Winter Field Day, developing tactical communications projects, mentoring new operators, or building the next generation of communicators, the Flag & Torch Society remains dedicated to learning, teaching, and serving.
